Support Sudan’s first and only women farmers union to raise more successful harvests and sustain women farming communities.

Why we care: The Sudanese government’s farm aid programs exclude women, denying them credit and agricultural inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer.

How we’re solving this: MADRE supports 3,000 women farmers so that they can grow the food their families need to survive and encourage young women to become farmers.

MADRE and Zenab for Women in Development launched Sudan’s first and only women farmers union, Women Farmers Unite. The program gives women the tools, resources and technical assistance they need to sustain their families for the long haul.

Women Farmers Unite provides women farmers with seeds and supplies, including plows, an oil miller, and a tractor. They also help consolidate resources and knowledge among these farmers, including figuring the effects of global climate change, floods, and droughts. As a result of the tools, resources, and assistance, women farmers are able to

  • increase food production,
  • reduce the number of hours farming the land,
  • conserve natural resources,
  • save energy,
  • and maximize profit.

This program will focus on 20 young women to help ensure their generation continues to provide a local, sustainable food supply. With their new income, these women will be able to invest in their communities and send their daughters to school.
